Betty White cause of death: Golden Girls star suffered a stroke

Betty White’s cause of death has been confirmed as a stroke that took place six days before she died, according to reports.

Golden Girls actress White died on New Year’s Eve aged 99, just weeks before her 100th birthday and the news sent shockwaves around the globe.

TMZ claims her cause of death has been listed as a cerebrovascular accident, the official term for a stroke. She later died peacefully in her sleep at her home.

A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

They are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential. The sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen.

White was best known for starring as Rose in the 1980s sitcom Golden Girls.

She also appeared in hit US sitcoms including Hot In Cleveland, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Betty White Show and Life With Elizabeth during a career spanning more than 80 years.

Many stars paid tribute to White following the news of her passing, including Dolly Parton.

‘While watching the news last night I learned of Betty White’s passing,’ she penned.

‘Betty will live forever not only in this world but the world here after. I will always love her as we all will!’

Ryan Reynolds, who starred with White in the 2009 rom-com The Proposal, has also paid tribute after the pair shared a lengthy friendship and jokey flirtation.

He wrote in an emotional tribute: ‘The world looks different now.

‘She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough.

‘We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret.’
