Chris Wood swaps Burnley for Newcastle and is set for Turf Moor return in final Premier League game of the season

Chris Wood swapped one relegation battle for another as he joined Newcastle from Burnley on Thursday.

The 30-year-old striker signed for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £20million, and penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the Premier League club.

The transfer is something of a contentious one as Burnley and Newcastle are 18th and 19th in the Premier League, respectively, and level on points.

Both sides have struggled for goals this season and Wood could make the difference for the Magpies in the second half of the campaign.

All eyes will be on when the potential reunion could happen at Turf Moor… and it’s the final game of the season.

It could be a relegation decider on May 22 with both sides scrapping to stay in the top flight.

Wood’s goals will be tough to replace, netting double figures in each of his four full seasons at Burnley.

He has only hit three so far this season, but while he improves the Magpies, it has also weakened their rivals.

talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook said: “There’s been a bit of snobbery when it comes to this deal. It’s a win-win for Newcastle. They’ve weakened Burnley, who are clearly unhappy with the transaction.

“He’s proven in the Premier League and will debut this weekend. Kieran Trippier will be delivering just the ball Chris Wood will be wanting to get on the end of.

“When Callum Wilson is fit, that could be a good partnership. Reminiscent when Bournemouth were promoted to the Premier League and he had a partnership with Yann Kermorgant, the French striker.

“This is a really shrewd piece of business. Yes it’s not Kylian Mbappe, but I think Chris Wood can make a difference between now and the end of the season.”

Wood, signed in time to make his debut in Saturday’s must-win showdown with fellow strugglers Watford at St James’ Park, told the club website: “This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player.

“I have played at St James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so to have the chance to represent this club with those incredible supporters behind me and my team-mates is very special.

“The club and manager have been first class during this process, and I really can’t wait to get onto the pitch and repay the faith they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead of us.”
