Devon Conway blasted by Ian Smith after breaking hand ahead of final, New Zealand vs Australia

New Zealand great Ian Smith has hammered injured star Devon Conway for breaking his hand in a “dumb act” during his team’s semi-final win over England.

Conway has become a mainstay in all three formats since making his New Zealand debut last November, with his quality highlighted by a double-century on his Test debut against England in Lord’s.

The left-hander has become a prolific run-scorer in the T20 format as well, boasting an average of 50.16 and a strike rate of 139.35, and played a key role in the Black Caps’ win over England.

However, after being dismissed for 46 in New Zealand’s run chase, Conway broke his hand after punching his bat in anger, and therefore will miss tonight’s T20 final.

Smith, who represented New Zealand in 63 Tests and 98 ODIs, said the 30-year-old has let himself and his team down.

“A lot of people over here have felt sorry for him, but I think he’s let himself down,” he told Fox Cricket.

“He’s only been in this side for six or seven months. He’s a hell of a player, outside of Williamson I think he’s the best player we’ve got and he’s emerged to that sort of status in a very short space of time.

“What he did there was stupid, it was almost selfish and it probably sways the balance of this game moreso in Australia’s way that it perhaps would’ve been anyway.

“I think they’ll miss him badly because the balance of the side goes, he was the keeper as well. I put it down to being a dumb act.”
