Emmerdale stars Matthew Wolfenden and Charley Webb reunited alongside their co-stars for a New Year’s Eve party amid an ongoing race row behind the scenes of the soap.

The couple, who married in 2018, were joined by some fellow soap stars to ring in 2022, including Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas Dingle, Emma Atkins who plays Charity Dingle, Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley and his wife Zoe Henry who has held down roles on Emmerdale and EastEnders.

Charley quit the show last month after playing Debbie Dingle for almost 20 years, with it being reported that her husband Matthew and co-star Isabel Hodgins clashed furiously behind the scenes of the show in early November.

Later in November, reports came out that a mixed-race actress’ accent had been “mimicked”, sparking a race probe.

Despite all this, the cast seemed to enjoy a New Year’s Eve party, with Charley sharing a selection of snaps of her and her onscreen family on Instagram for her 548k followers to see.

Charley donned a sleek black dress as she beamed for a photo alongside Emma, who plays her onscreen mother on the ITV soap.

Matthew, 41, smiled for a photo alongside Jeff and his wife Zoe, who plays Emmerdale vet Rhona Goskirk.

The actors seemed to be enjoying themselves as they celebrated in Charley and Matthew’s home.

Charley quit the show after almost 20 years

The Sun reports that Charley will not be returning to Emmerdale as she is “closing the door” on the show after almost 20 years.

Matthew and Charley share three children, Buster, 11, Bowie, six, and Ace, two, with Charley making a brief return to the Dales after the birth of her youngest son.

A source said: “The past few months have given her time to think about the future and it is one that doesn’t involve Emmerdale. Matthew being caught up in the row on set fuelled her decision to step away.

“Charley has been on Emmerdale for 19 years and her character Debbie has had a rollercoaster ride. It’s time for a new adventure for Charley.

“Naturally the door is open for her character, who is now living in Scotland, should she change her mind. But for now she is looking to the future.”

A spokesperson for Emmerdale said: “There are no current plans for Debbie Dingle to return.”

Charley seems happy to be taking time away from the soap, with her sharing an adorable video to Instagram last week.

The sweet Christmas montage showed her and Matthew’s children joyously celebrating Christmas.

She captioned the sweet post: “Christmas 2021 Thank you for everything this year, you guys are my favourite Instagram team. I love sharing things with you guys and all our little chats.

“I hope you all had the loveliest day and I’m thinking of everyone that may have had a harder day yesterday. Love you all lots.”
