Fans think Wolff response to Hamilton overtaking Verstappen is rivalry ‘getting personal’

Formula One fans think that Mercedes chief Toto Wolff’s response to Lewis Hamilton overtaking Max Verstappen at the Brazilian Grand Prix shows the rivalry ‘getting personal’.

Mercedes’ Hamilton is currently embroiled in a fierce title race with Red Bull driver Verstappen for this season’s Drivers’ Championship.

Ahead of Sunday’s race, 21 points separated the pair with four races remaining and Verstappen ahead as he targets a maiden championship victory.

As Hamilton overtook his title rival during the race, Wolff could be seen celebrating by pointing to a camera in the Mercedes garage and shouting something as he looked down the lens.

The British driver had been forced to start in 10th place on the grid after being disqualified from Friday’s qualifying and taking a penalty for an engine change.

However, he overtook his title rival after Verstappen took a pit stop and went on to win in Sao Paulo to reduce the gap to Verstappen down to 14 points with three races remaining.

Fans were quick to react to Wolff’s celebration, with some believing that his response showed that the rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull was getting personal.

One fan wrote on Twitter afterwards: “This is getting personal between Mercedes and Red Bull. Hamilton takes the lead and Toto Wolff is bloody happy with that.”

Earlier in the season, Wolff had labelled his Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner a “Hollywood actor” and described him as “a bit of a windbag who wants to be on camera” after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Despite this, Horner denied the rivalry has become personal earlier this week as he explained: “No, not really. It’s about what happens on track.

“It’s a competitive business, it’s competitive on and off track, and there’s an awful lot going on off-track as well as on it, so that only raises tensions.

“It’s all part of the jousting isn’t it, part of Formula 1.”

The F1 calendar heads to Qatar next weekend for the third race of a triple header, with Hamilton hoping he can further eat into Verstappen’s lead and maybe even knock him off the top of the standings.
