Mo Gilligan has confirmed that he will be taking the place of Jack Whitehall as Brit Awards host for next year’s show held on 8 February 2022.

The comedian took to social media to announce the news, posting a photo of himself on Instagram wearing an orange shirt jacket as he beamed at the camera whilst holding an iconic Brit gong.

“Excited To Announce I’m going to be your host for the 2022 @brits Awards,” Mo captioned the post.

“This is a huge honour for me and being a fan of music I can’t wait bring fun, unlimited vibes and an award show the music fans can feel part of at @theo2london and watching along on @itv for the #BRITs love for the continued support it always means a lot.”

This will be the first time the 33 year old has presented at the Brit Awards – which has removed gendered categories – and it is the first time there has been a black British person hosting at the ceremony since it was first held in 1977.

Shortly after he made his big announcement, Mo shared with his 843,000 followers an old screenshot of a tweet he sent out in 2011 predicting that he would host the Brit Awards by 2013.

“OK I managed to bag 1 of the 2 and it happened a little later than 2013 but don’t stop believing. Anything is possible,” he wrote above an image of the tweet and a photo of his hosting announcement.

After hosting the Brit Awards for four consecutive years, fellow comedian Jack Whitehall stepped down from the position a couple of months ago, leaving it open for Mo to takeover after his career has began to skyrocket these past few years.

Jack tweeted in September: “Sad to say after 4 brilliant years, I’ll be handing on the baton as I’ll be in the US filming another project at the top of next year. Loved doing it so much. All the best to the new host, I pray they treat Mursy, my mixers and sweet little Nialler with the respect they deserve.”

As well as his latest hosting gig, Mo co-presented the Big Breakfast with AJ Odudu as it returned to Channel 4 this September, and has appeared on several British shows including The Masked Singer UK, Celebrity Gogglebox and his own chat show, The Lateish Show as well as The Big Narstie Show.
