Sean Payton started crying when he saw Jameis Winston on crutches postgame

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton revealed that he cried when he saw quarterback Jameis Winston on crutches in the locker room.

On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints defeated the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers by the score of 36-27. They managed to do so without quarterback Jameis Winston for the majority of the game, who exited after suffering an injury to his left knee.

Backup Trevor Siemian stepped in and helped defeat the Buccaneers.

While speaking with the media after the game, head coach Sean Payton revealed that he cried when seeing Winston on crutches in the locker room.

Saints believe Jameis Winston suffered significant knee injury

Payton was not done speaking about Winston’s injury. The head coach expressed his belief that Winston suffered a significant knee injury.

The injury to the former 2015 first-overall pick occurred in the first half, when he was brought down by Buccaneers linebacker Devin White. As Winston was being brought to the ground by his right arm, he twisted his left knee, resulting in him being helped off the field and carted to the locker room area.

After the game, Ian Rapoport and Jane Slater of NFL Network noted that the injury suffered by Winston was to his ACL and potentially his MCL.

In his relief appearance, Siemian completed 16-of-29 of his passes for 159 yards and one touchdown, which came on a one-yard pass to running back Alex Armah.

Payton will be awaiting the official diagnosis for Winston’s injury and to see how much time the quarterback could miss. Given his answer in the press conference, he is expecting Winston to miss a decent amount of time.
