The Canadian pop star opted to end his relationship with Crying In The Club singer Camila in November last year – and now admits he is struggling following the end of the passionate romance
Shawn Mendes has confessed he is struggling after opting to go solo after ditching girlfriend Camila Cabello just weeks ago.
The 23-year-old Canadian pop singer dumped 24-year-old Cuban-American ex-Fifth Harmony singer Camila back in November and has now opened up about the ache he feels in his heart since the collapse of the two-year relationship.
Shawn and Camila were first linked in July 2019 and appeared to seize every available moment to make very public displays of affection when they were together.
But the relationship came to a crashing end in November last year – with Shawn later realising break-up anthem It’ll Be Okay from the ashes of the collapsed romance.
Taking to Instagram in the hours ahead of the New Year, Shawn appeared to be in a reflective mood as he looked back over his year, the end of his relationship, and fans’ reactions to his new single.
He said: “I just wanted to make a little video and say thank you to everybody who has been connecting with ‘It’ll Be Okay’ and posting videos,” Mendes, 23, shared from his Toronto home Thursday via Instagram. “I’m having a little bit of a hard time with social media at the moment and just kind of my relationship with it.
“But I have lots of people sending me videos and telling me what’s going on.”
He went on: “When I make music, the ultimate goal is to be sitting there and have my own truth revealed to me,” he went on. “And a lot of the time when I’m writing songs I’m usually using music as a platform to be able to get to a place inside of myself that I wouldn’t be able through by just talking with people or thinking about it.”
“And I hope that’s because there’s some truth in the song and there lies honesty in it.
“And I just feel so proud of that song and I feel so grateful that you guys are connecting with it and I feel so grateful that people are be vulnerable with it and people are just having fun with it.”
Coming to the end of his address, Shawn went on: “I just wanted to come on here and show my love and appreciation.
“I see you guys and I see how much love you’re giving this song and giving me and that means the world to me. So thank you, I love you guys.”
In November last year it was claimed that Shawn was the one to pull the plug on his relationship with Camila.
A source told E! News at the time: “The relationship was getting stale and complacent, and they decided they are better off being friends.
“It was really hard for a few days but she has been spending a lot of time with friends and keeping busy. She has a huge support system and is feeling renewed now..”
The source went on to claim that Camila and Shawn are “still in communication and want to be friends,” and that it: “was not a bad breakup at all.”
While the couple themselves announced their split just two days prior, writing online in a joint statement: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever.
“We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”
They ended their announcement with a message of gratitude to their supporters: “We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
