Superior Grocers shooting: Six injured as gunman storms strip mall and staff take cover

Six people have been wounded after terrifying scenes saw a gunman storm a strip mall.

The shooting took place outside Superior Grocers based in South Los Angeles around 4pm local time on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

Police say a man opened fire inside the market, with unconfirmed reports claiming one victim was shot in the head.

Fox News writes two people are currently fighting for their life after the incident.

Early reports state three people have been allegedly been wounded, two male and one female.

However, Los Angeles Fire Department said multiple people are being rushed to hospital and several were shot.

Others have suffered graze wounds after the terrifying incident, LAFD added.

One suffered a glass injury, according to the fire department.

A spokesperson told Eyewitness News one of the shooting victims is reportedly a 54-year-old woman who was shot in the back.

No information on a suspect or suspects has been made available.

Employees of the store supposedly took shelter in the vault room as the shooting occurred.

The area surrounding the shopping center has been closed off as officers and paramedics continue their investigation.

It took place at a strip mall located at 10211 S. Avalon Blvd., just outside of a Superior Grocers grocery store.

Live photos from the scene show the area swarmed with police and emergency vehicles as members of the public are being urged to stay away from the perimeter.

At least five cop cars have been dispatched to the incident and three ambulances.

The suspect or suspects are not clear at this time; motive is not clear either.

It comes days after a teenage girl, aged 14, was killed inside a store during a police shootout when a stray bullet caught her.

Christmas shoppers were fleeing the scene after chaotic scenes emerged inside the Burlington store in North Hollywood.

Police later confirmed the suspect also died at the scene after being shot by an officer.

Cops were called to the store at around 11.45am on Thursday after receiving reports of shots being fired.

They were told people were taking cover inside the store when they rushed to the incident after witnesses say they saw a man attacking customers.

Although it was initially unclear whether he had a gun, officers found an armed individual assaulting a woman inside.

Los Angeles police Captain Stacy Spell said at a press conference that the woman who was being attacked by the man was hospitalised after the incident
