Russia has provided some great combat sport stars and moments, but a female MMA fighter taking on a 37-stone blogger in an inter-gender bout may rank as the weirdest.
In November 2020, the ‘Red Queen’ Darina Mazdyuk, 29, stepped up to face YouTuber Grigory Chistyakov in the biggest mismatch in history.
But Mazdyuk, who didn’t even weigh 10 stone, wasn’t intimidated by either the weight or gender difference – and it was even her idea.
She came up with the brave concept of the bout to build her profile and hopefully secure a contract with one of the top promotions.
And the risk paid off, as her experience of being in the cage ultimately outweighed (if you’ll pardon the pun) Chistyakov’s size advantage.
She had to deal with some wild punches in the early going, one of which connected, and then a headlock up against the metal.
But after the referee had reset the fighters, Mazdyuk landed a clean right which floored the big man, before her ground and pound forced him into tapping out after less than 90 seconds.

The footage went viral and caught the eye of Bellator, who signed her to a multi-fight deal after watching the bizarre win.
“It was actually me who initiated it,” Mazdyuk told MMA Junkie.
“I got the idea of fighting someone huge and with that, there’s a promotional value not just for Russia, but for the US and other countries.
“It turns out, this way I was able to draw attention to (myself). This way, I scored a Bellator contract.”
While the Red Queen got the better of the inter-gender fight, her Bellator debut ended in defeat last month.
She suffered a second-round TKO loss to Katarzyna Sadura at Bellator 269 in her home city of Moscow.
Her professional MMA record now reads three wins and two losses – or four and two if you think her most famous fight should count.
